Meru Sewerage Project

Meru Sewerage Project is a major sanitation infrastructure initiative being implemented by Tana

Water Works Development Agency (TWWDA) under the Kenya Towns Sustainable Water

Supply and Sanitation Program. The project is jointly financed by the Government of Kenya and

the African Development Bank (AfDB) and is designed to improve sanitation services, protect

public health, and conserve the environment in Meru Town and its surrounding areas.

The project includes:

 Construction of an 11,700 cubic metres per day sewage treatment plant at Thuura

(Rwanyange)

 Development of over 52 kilometres of trunk and reticulation sewer pipelines

 Construction of an administration block

 Laboratory and staff houses

 Associated infrastructure such as access roads, perimeter fencing and operational

equipment.

Once complete, the project will serve an estimated 193,000 residents, significantly enhancing

wastewater management and supporting sustainable urban development.

The project remains a key investment in improving sanitation services, reducing environmental

pollution, and promoting healthier communities across Meru Town.
